In martial arts—and in life—progress is earned, not given. Every belt on our students’ waists represents time, effort, discipline, and growth. That’s why we want to remind everyone just how important consistent training is when working towards the next rank.
📅 Grading Eligibility: What You Need to Know
We understand that everyone’s schedules are different, and we appreciate every student who makes the commitment to show up. But for clarity, here’s how grading eligibility works at Evolution Martial Arts:
✅ Students training 2x per week – This is our standard progression path. You need a minimum of 18 classes since your last grading to be eligible for your next full belt.
✅ Students training 1x per week – You’re still progressing, just at a slower pace, as you only cover half the curriculum. You’ll need at least 8 classes since your last grading. Depending on your readiness, you may receive a tab promotion between belts to keep you moving forward.
✅ Training 3–4x per week – Amazing! You’ll likely progress faster, as you’re covering more material and building stronger habits.
Important:
Attending twice per week and paying for twice per week are not the same thing. You can’t “buy” a belt—you have to earn it through effort and attendance. If your attendance is below the minimum required, you’ll likely receive a tab instead of a full belt—no matter your payment plan.
🎯 Why This Matters
We don’t do any of this to be harsh. We do it because it matters. It honours the effort that so many of our students (and parents!) put into their martial arts journey. Giving out belts that haven’t been earned doesn’t help anyone—it devalues the martial art, and it takes away from the time, sacrifice, and dedication others have shown.
🗓 Plan Ahead, Train With Intention
Our grading dates are set at the start of the year and remain fairly consistent. Put them in your diary. Build around them. Life will always get busy—but during certain times of the year, your martial arts journey should be a priority. Not forever. But for a focused window, yes—it should be.
This is about more than belts. It’s about teaching ourselves—and our kids—the value of hard work, discipline, commitment, and the reward that comes from showing up consistently.
Every martial artist’s goal should be to one day wear that Black Belt. Not just as a symbol, but as a testament to what you’ve become in the process:
💪 Stronger.
💪 More focused.
💪 More resilient.
💪 More respectful.
💪 More determined.
This is the Martial Arts Mindset. This is what we’re really building. And this is why your next class matters.
See you on the mats,
Master Craig
